Our Termly Topic: Journeys
This term, our theme has been Journeys, inspired by the beautiful wordless storybook Journey. It has been wonderful to see the children’s imaginations flourish across all areas of learning!
Literacy
We used Journey as inspiration to create our very own story, also titled Journey. The children imagined magical places they would visit if they had their own magic pencil, developing storytelling skills and creativity.
Expressive Arts
Building on the theme, we created artwork based on the destinations from our magic pencil adventures. Using cars dipped in paint, the children made exciting patterns to represent the tracks cars leave behind. We also went on our own paint walks using our bare feet to create colorful journeys on paper!
Science and Technology
Exploring modes of travel from the story, we constructed our own vehicles using junk materials and bottle tops. Working as a team, we followed instructions to make hot air balloons and tested whether they would rise using hot air. We also made paper boats to explore concepts of floating and sinking.
Outdoor Learning
During Outdoor Learning Week, we enjoyed sensory walks, planted seeds and flowers around the school, and created beautiful natural mandalas, connecting deeply with the environment.
Mathematics
Through child-initiated learning, the children used shapes to create pictures and images. We explored numbers using ten frames, developing counting skills, building quantities, and recording them through number writing. Our journey theme extended to map work, where we explored measuring distances and finding the longest and shortest routes.
Health and Wellbeing
We played team games like Treasure Islands, practicing safe movement in shared spaces. We learned about families, discussing who belongs in our families and how to care for each other. We explored friendship qualities and reflected on the kind of friends we want to be.
