Summer 2026 in Llyn Alwen

🎶🎨Creative Learning

We have had a fantastic time of creative learning in Llyn Alwen, with lots of exciting opportunities for the children to explore, create and grow in confidence.

🎵 Music

Year 3 continued to enjoy regular visits from Katy, our music specialist, from Wrexham Music Cooperative. Through these sessions, pupils have been developing their ability to work collaboratively, using buckets as drums and playing Samba music, singing in tune and confidently exploring musical scales.

They have also had the opportunity to learn the recorder and perform together, building both musical skill and confidence. Across the year, the children have deepened their understanding of pitch, dynamics and rhythm, whilst learning how to perform as part of a group.

🎨 Art

In art, we celebrated Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday by creating incredible wildlife sketches. Pupils experimented with pastels, carefully observing detail to produce vibrant and expressive pieces inspired by the natural world.

We also celebrated St David’s Day with beautiful artwork based on a special place in Wales. We were very proud of Matilda for being crowned our overall winner this year – a super achievement and well deserved!

💃 Dance & Topic Work

As part of our dinosaurs and Mary Anning topic, children explored dance by focusing on different shapes, movements, speed and expression, as well as working together in unison. They created their own movement sequences to tell a story, showing fantastic teamwork and creativity.

The children also became palaeontologists, creating fossils using salt dough. They carefully observed patterns and textures before adding colour to make their work look realistic.

We took our learning outdoors into Forest School, where the children worked together to create group dinosaur models.

🦕 Trips & Experiences

Our visit to Manchester Museum to see dinosaurs up close was a highlight of the year. It provided great inspiration for our learning, and the children even created their own museum back in the classroom!

📚 Reading & Stories

World Book Day was another wonderful day, full of fantastic costumes and excitement about favourite books. The children loved sharing stories together and enjoyed our Reading Café, chatting with friends over hot chocolate and biscuits.

We have continued our close links with Booka Bookshop and welcomed author Donna David into school with her book Awesomely Adventurous Librarians.

We have also been lucky to work with storyteller Amy Douglas, whose traditional Welsh stories have inspired lots of imaginative story writing.

🔬 Science Week

During British Science Week, the children enjoyed lots of hands-on learning, including soil experiments, exploring bones and skeletons, STEM challenges and using microscopes. The Glitterbug handwashing experiment was especially memorable!

🏃 Physical Development

We welcomed Active Wrexham into school, where the children enjoyed learning new games and developing their ball skills. There was lots of fun, teamwork and cooperation.

✝️ RE

The children created Easter gardens to help them understand the story of Jesus and his disciples during this important Christian celebration.

🛠️ Design & Technology

Using books by Andrea Beaty, we have been exploring storytelling, design and engineering. The children created and adapted helicopter designs, testing and improving their ideas and working together to solve problems.

Next half term, we will be learning about famous buildings and bridges.

🌟 Final Thoughts

It has been fantastic to see the children grow in confidence and creativity. We are very proud of all they have achieved and how they have worked together across all areas of learning.
