A Wonderful and Busy Term in Nursery! 🌟

This term in Nursery has been full of curiosity, creativity, and excitement as the children have explored a range of new ideas through play, discussion, and hands-on learning. It has been fantastic to see their confidence grow as they share their ideas and develop new skills across all areas of the curriculum.

📚 Exploring Stories and Feelings

In our Literacy sessions, we have been busy reading and responding to stories. One of our favourites was Not Now, Bernard. The children showed great thoughtfulness as they discussed how Bernard might feel when no one listens to him. They shared a range of ideas, describing him as feeling sad, lonely, worried, and ignored.

We then thought about how Bernard might express his feelings. The children came up with some wonderful ideas, including:

  • “Please listen to me.”
  • “I need help.”
  • “I feel sad when you don’t talk to me.”

This activity helped the children to explore emotions, build empathy, and understand the importance of using their voice to express how they feel. We were incredibly proud of their thoughtful responses and growing confidence in sharing their ideas.

🔢 Learning Through Play in Maths

In Maths, the children have been developing their early number skills through practical, play-based activities. They have been working on counting objects carefully, matching quantities, and beginning to use mathematical language such as more than and fewer than.

Using dice, the children generated numbers and then counted out the correct number of objects, such as “snacks” for their lunch boxes. They loved comparing their amounts, confidently discussing:

  • Who had more than
  • Who had fewer than
  • Who had the same amount

We also explored comparing groups using bricks and picture cards. The children carefully counted each group and used language such as “more,” “fewer,” and “the same.” It was wonderful to hear them naturally using these terms during their play and explaining their thinking with growing confidence.

🌱 Discovering the World Around Us

In our Science learning, the children have been fascinated by life cycles, particularly the life cycle of frogs. They loved exploring small models and seeing each stage up close. This has sparked lots of excitement, with many children eager to look out for tadpoles and other signs of life in local ponds and rivers.

This learning linked beautifully with our work on minibeasts and microhabitats, helping the children to make real-world connections. Their curiosity, enthusiasm, and eagerness to learn more have been fantastic to see — da iawn pawb!

⚽ Active Learning in PE

In PE, we have been developing important physical skills through fun and active sessions. The children have practised aiming, rolling, throwing, and kicking, building their coordination and control. They have also explored using different targets to improve their accuracy and direction.

Throughout these sessions, the children have:

  • Developed gross motor skills through movement
  • Improved fine motor control and hand–eye coordination
  • Practised moving safely in shared spaces
  • Built confidence working with others
  • Begun to recognise how their bodies feel during exercise

We are especially excited as the children begin preparing for their very first Sports Day, and we can’t wait to see them in action!

✨ It has been a fantastic term in Nursery, full of exploration, excitement, and growing independence. We are so proud of all the children and look forward to even more adventures ahead! ✨
