Our Learning Journey Around the World – Nursery & Reception
This term, our Nursery and Reception children have been travelling the globe through play, stories, music, food, creativity, and cultural exploration. Each country has sparked curiosity, imagination, and rich learning across all six Areas of Learning and Experience within the Curriculum for Wales.
Armenia
We began in Armenia, discovering the extraordinary cave churches carved into the mountains. Children explored how Armenian people worship in these ancient spaces and talked about special places in their own lives.
Activities included:
· Exploring images and videos of Armenian cave monasteries
· Recreating caves and churches through block play and natural materials
· Listening to Armenian music and responding through movement and drawing
· Creating Armenian-inspired patterns
· Discussing what “special places” mean to different people
Scotland
Our journey continued to Scotland, where we celebrated Burns Night with poetry, music, food and traditions.
The children enjoyed a live drumming session, baked traditional shortbread and explored tartan patterns through weaving and paint.
Activities included:
· Reciting simple Scottish poems
· Experiencing live Scottish drumming
· Making and tasting shortbread
· Scottish dancing
· Creating tartan weaving and painted patterns
Jamaica
Our next stop brought us sunshine and rhythm as we explored Jamaican culture. The classroom filled with reggae music, tropical flavours and colourful art.
Children also explored the expressive artwork of Bernard Hoyes, creating their own vibrant, energetic pieces.
Activities included:
· Listening and dancing to reggae
· Tasting spice buns and tropical fruit
· Exploring Jamaican landscapes and island life
· Studying Bernard Hoyes’ artwork and creating inspired pieces
· Learning simple Jamaican greetings
New Zealand
As we approach the half term break, we are travelling to New Zealand, learning about the rich traditions of the M?ori people.
We are exploring M?ori patterns, music, greetings and stories, as well as discovering the unique wildlife and landscapes of Aotearoa.
Activities include:
· Creating M?ori-inspired patterns and artwork
· Listening to traditional songs and stories
· Exploring New Zealand animals and natural environments
· Acting out M?ori legends through imaginative play
And our journey isn’t over yet…
Our travels around the world will continue as we move into the second half of the term!
Wales – Celebrating the Eisteddfod
We will begin close to home by exploring Wales, celebrating our culture through poetry, music, storytelling and creative arts as part of our school Eisteddfod. Children will learn Welsh songs, hear traditional tales and create artwork inspired by Welsh heritage.
China – Chinese New Year
After Wales, we will be travelling to China as we celebrate Chinese New Year. The children will take part in an exciting Chinese dance workshop, explore traditional celebrations, try themed crafts, learn about the Zodiac story and take part in vibrant creative activities linked to this special festival.
