Spring 2026 in Llyn Alwen

Llyn Alwen Class Update – A New Year of Discovery!

As we welcomed in a new year filled with new beginnings, Llyn Alwen embarked on an exciting new topic. This idea was sparked during a lively discussion with a group of children on the way back from our pantomime visit last term. After lots of enthusiasm and a class vote, we are thrilled to begin our new learning journey into the world of dinosaurs and fossils!

Snowy Adventures

We were delighted to spend time playing with our friends in the snow. There was so much excitement as the children worked together to build snow people and snow animals—an unexpected but very joyful start to the term.

Teamwork has also featured in our Jigsaw work

Exploring Dinosaurs and Fossils

To kick off our topic, we used a Talking Bag filled with images, objects and discussion prompts linked to dinosaurs and fossils. This helped us share what we already know, make connections with our previous learning, and ask questions about what we’re curious to find out next.

From these discussions, we have arranged an exciting trip to Manchester Museum to meet April the Dinosaur! Before our visit, we’ll be planning our journey and exploring a “big question” posed to us by the palaeontologist at the museum.

Big questions like – does size matter?

We have also spent time closely observing real fossils and even creating our own. These will soon be displayed—and sold! — in our very own class museum, which we have begun designing together.

Digital Learning and Online Safety

As part of our digital curriculum, we have started learning about passwords and data safety using The Digital Learning Den. The children have been developing their understanding of how to keep information safe online.

Chess With Mr. Clarke

We were very pleased to welcome back Mr. Bob Clarke from Chess, who has been teaching us how to use the different chess pieces and how to play full games against each other. The children have shown huge enthusiasm—watch this space, as we may soon have a chess master in our midst! Chess continues to be a popular choice during child?initiated learning time.

Katie also returned to do more music with us – this time focusing on singing techniques,

and a wonderful treat – welcoming author C. M. Lewis to our school, joined by the brilliant Sian from Booka Bookshop. We learnt about her characters and how Welsh myths and legends have influenced her writing. The children were inspired to hear how her writing journey began when she was at school. We are excited to have more author visits planned as we celebrate The National Year of Reading.
