Spring Term 2022

Welcome to the Spring Term in Year 2

We began our spring term looking at the story Tidy by Emily Gravett. We created story maps, wrote a letter to Emily, we are now waiting for her reply. We ended up creating a fantastic front cover for our own story based on Tidy.

We celebrated St David’s Day by creating beautiful works of art based on landscapes of Wales and learning the poem:

She wore her greenest gown;

She turned to the south wind

And curtsied up and down.

She turned to the sunlight

And shook her yellow head,

And whispered to her neighbour:

“Winter is dead.” 

To celebrate World Book Day we had a ‘reading cafe’ where we made Snowdonia milkshakes and shared our favourite books with each other.

We have been offered the opportunity by GwE to undergo woodwork training with the amazing and inspirational Pete Moorhouse. We have developed a new and improved woodwork area in our outside classroom and are teaching the children how to use tools safely. This will then be part of our enhanced and continuous provision.

We are using the books: Rosie Revere the Engineer and Iggy Peck the Architect as a basis for our learning this term. We have set up an ‘Architect’s Office’ and a ‘Tinkering Station’. This will enable the children to design and create indoors and using their new woodwork area. Using these areas of enhanced provision we are aiming to develop children’s creative and critical thinking skills.

We have celebrated national outdoor learning week with a range of activities to develop our collaborative learning and problem-solving skills as well as scientific investigation and numeracy. You will be able to see from the photographs below that with the help of Wildbanks Conservation we carried out pond dipping in the grounds of school using ID charts to find out what we had living in our pond. We played some new team games learning to take turns and play by a set of rules. We had to work in teams to create a tennis ball run, we made a quoit game by measuring sticks and created hoops made from willow, and we plotted the pitch.
